Frangokastello
Frangokastello is a Venetian fortress with a legendary past, surrounded by a stunning sandy beach and the occasional sighting of “ghostly warriors.”
Built in the 14th century by the Venetians, Frangokastello was intended to protect the coast from pirates and local rebellions. The fortress stands as an imposing structure with well-preserved walls and battlements, offering insight into Crete’s tumultuous history.
The site is steeped in legend, with tales of the Drosoulites — shadowy figures said to appear at dawn, believed to be the spirits of warriors who died in a historic battle. This myth adds an air of mystery to the already impressive site.
Adjacent to the fortress is a beautiful sandy beach with shallow, clear waters, making it a favorite for families. Visitors can combine a day of history and relaxation at this unique location.
