Samaria Gorge
Samaria Gorge is one of the longest gorges in Europe, stretching 16 kilometers through the heart of the White Mountains, offering breathtaking scenery and a challenging trek.
Samaria Gorge begins at Xyloskalo, near the village of Omalos, at an altitude of 1,230 meters. The trail winds down steep cliffs, leading you into a lush valley surrounded by towering rock walls. The first section is the steepest, known for its zigzagging paths and panoramic views of the mountains.
The gorge narrows dramatically at the famous "Iron Gates," where the walls are only three meters apart and rise vertically over 300 meters. Along the way, you'll encounter native flora and fauna, including the endangered Cretan wild goat, or kri-kri, which thrives in this protected area. Rest stops are available at intervals with natural springs for hydration.
The trek ends in the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where you can relax on the beach or enjoy a refreshing meal before taking a boat to nearby villages. Due to its length and difficulty, the trek is recommended for those in good physical condition, but its natural beauty makes it worth the effort.
